1911 Cleaning & Firearm Inspection

Before any cleaning or inspection, confirm the firearm is unloaded. Remove the magazine, lock the slide to the rear, and visually and physically check the chamber. Keep ammunition in a separate room while you work. At Clear Creek Tactical, safe handling comes before everything else — there are no shortcuts here.

Work on a clean, well-lit surface with a quality cleaning mat. Good lighting is what makes a real inspection possible; most worn or cracked parts are missed simply because they were never seen clearly.

Field-strip the 1911 to its main groups — slide, frame, barrel, recoil spring assembly, and guide rod. Use a solvent made for firearms to break down carbon and fouling on the slide rails, barrel hood, feed ramp, and breech face. A bronze brush and patches handle the bore; a nylon brush works well for the frame rails and small recesses.

Wipe everything down until patches come out clean, then apply a light, even film of quality lubricant to the rails, barrel, and contact points. The 1911 runs best lightly lubricated, not flooded. Excess oil simply collects grit and carbon.

Inspection is where 1911-focused gunsmithing earns its keep. Check the extractor tension, the firing pin and firing pin stop, the locking lugs on the barrel and slide, and the recoil spring for fatigue. Look closely at the feed ramp and throat for peening, and check the frame and slide rails for uneven wear or cracking.

Examine the magazines too — weak springs and damaged feed lips cause more malfunctions than the pistol itself. If anything looks worn, cracked, or out of spec, set it aside rather than reassembling and hoping for the best.

Routine cleaning is something most owners can do at home. But if you notice unusual wear, light primer strikes, failures to feed or eject, or anything that does not feel right, a hands-on inspection is worth the trip.
